Milepost 290 to Milepost 292

After receiving inquiries from citizens and elected officials about automobile accidents on State Route 69 between milepost 290 and 292 near Prescott Valley, AZ, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) conducted two safety studies to determine how best to reduce the occurrence of cross over crashes.

The result of the studies lead ADOT to the conclusion that those types of crashes could be reduced by erecting concrete barriers.

The Federal Highway Administration concurred with those findings.

In ADOT’s meetings with elected officials from Prescott, Prescott Valley and Yavapai County, it was decided that “SR 69” will be made as safe as possible while ensuring the roadway functions as a state highway.

ADOT is proceeding through the early design phase. Current plans include the construction of barrier gaps where only emergency vehicles will be allowed to turn. Other automobiles will be able to make safe u-turns in protected lanes at proposed traffic signals.

ADOT is adhering to national standards in the design of proposed traffic signals along the barrier route. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 miles per hour as drivers approach those signals.

SR 69 Repaving

The Arizona Department of Transportation will repave a 4.5-mile segment of State Route 69 beginning four miles northwest of Cordes Junction. Work will begin in summer of 2008 on the $3.1 million project, which is scheduled for completion by fall.

The project is located between MP 267.35 and 271.90. It will consist of removing a layer of the existing pavement and applying new pavement. There will be a new right turn lane at the Main Street entrance to Mayer, Arizona. Most of the work will be done at night.
